it's women's health month before you decide anything get an ultrasound

May is Women's Health Month — a reminder that every woman deserves complete, accurate health information before making any decision about her pregnancy. At our center, we offer free, confidential ultrasounds because we believe you deserve the full picture.

If you've just received a positive pregnancy test, you may be feeling overwhelmed, scared, or uncertain. Whatever you're feeling — that's okay. But before you make any decision about your pregnancy, there is one critical step that healthcare experts and pregnancy centers agree on: get an ultrasound.
This isn't just a formality. A first-trimester ultrasound provides essential medical information that can change everything about how you understand your situation. Here's why it matters so much.

1. A positive test doesn't always mean a viable pregnancy
A non-viable pregnancy (one that has already stopped developing, or never properly implanted) will not continue to term regardless of any decision made. If you are in this situation, medical guidance on next steps is what you need, not an abortion procedure.

A home pregnancy test detects the hormone hCG but it cannot tell you whether a pregnancy is healthy, developing, or even located in the right place. Only an ultrasound can reveal that.
10–20% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage naturally
1–2% of pregnancies are ectopic — a potentially life-threatening emergency
Up to 30% of early pregnancies may not be viable even before symptoms appear

Why this matters
Women who undergo an abortion procedure for a pregnancy that was already miscarrying — or who take the abortion pill for a non-viable pregnancy — are taking on unnecessary medical risk. An ultrasound prevents this entirely by giving you the real picture first.

2. An ectopic pregnancy is a medical emergency
An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus — most often in a fallopian tube. It cannot result in a live birth and, if left untreated, can rupture and cause life-threatening internal bleeding.
Critically, an ectopic pregnancy will not be resolved by the abortion pill. Mifepristone and misoprostol only work on pregnancies inside the uterus. Taking the abortion pill when you have an ectopic pregnancy can mask symptoms while the ectopic continues to grow — delaying life-saving treatment.
Medical alert Signs of ectopic pregnancy — sharp pelvic pain, shoulder pain, dizziness, or unusual spotting — can be subtle or absent in early weeks. The only way to rule one out is ultrasound confirmation of an intrauterine pregnancy. Never take the abortion pill without this confirmation.

3. Gestational age determines your medical options — and your risks
How far along a pregnancy is matters enormously for what options are safe and appropriate. Gestational age cannot be reliably determined by a last menstrual period alone — cycles vary, and implantation timing differs for every woman. An ultrasound is the only accurate way to date a pregnancy.
This is especially critical when it comes to the abortion pill (mifepristone + misoprostol). The FDA approves this regimen only through 70 days (10 weeks) of gestation. Taking it beyond this window significantly increases the risk of:
Hemorrhage Heavy bleeding requiring emergency care rises sharply after 10 weeks
Incomplete Risk of incomplete abortion requiring surgical intervention increases
Infection Serious infection and sepsis risk increases with gestational age
Women who obtain abortion pills online or via mail-order without an in-person exam may not know their true gestational age. Without an ultrasound, they may unknowingly take medication that is both less effective and far more dangerous for their stage of pregnancy.

4. Abortion facilities typically do not provide ultrasounds
Many women are surprised to learn that abortion clinics and facilities that dispense the abortion pill via telehealth often do not perform or require an ultrasound before providing services. This is not comprehensive women's healthcare — it is the omission of a critical diagnostic step.

What you deserve to know
Without an ultrasound, an abortion provider cannot confirm: whether your pregnancy is intrauterine, how far along you are, whether the pregnancy is still viable, or whether you are carrying multiples. These are not minor details — they are fundamental to your health and safety.

Our pregnancy center provides free, medical-grade ultrasounds performed by trained staff. We believe every woman has the right to complete information before making any decision.

5. What an ultrasound tells you
A first-trimester ultrasound can confirm or reveal:
  • Whether a fetal heartbeat is present (viability)
  • Gestational age and estimated due date
  • Location of the pregnancy (ruling out ectopic)
  • Number of embryos
  • Signs of miscarriage or pregnancy complications
This information is yours. It belongs to you. And every woman — whatever she decides — deserves to make that decision from a place of full knowledge, not uncertainty.
